Abstract

dc:description.abstract

Intestinal parasites still constitute a medical-sanitary very important, particularly with regard to the child population as it may compromise the physical and cognitive development of children and even lead to death. The other food handlers play a role significant in the transmission of intestinal parasites. In this context, the following objectives were defined: To investigate the occurrence of intestinal parasites in children and food handlers at the Reference Center for Early Childhood Education Our Lady of Good Hope, João Pessoa / PB; compare parasitological profiles in order to detect possible transmission of parasites manipulators for children and evaluate the conditions of personal hygiene and sanitation of food preparers. The sample comprised 204 individuals. Among the investigated 118 (58%) were children and 86 (42%) are food handlers. Community talks were given educational opportunities were distributed in Collectors stools and applied an epidemiological questionnaire. Then cropoparasitológicos examinations were performed by the technique of Hoffmann, Pons and Janner or Lutz and Blagg or MIFC. It was found that 65% of these individuals were parasitized, 37% were children and 28% were food handlers. Among children, were found the following species: Endolimax nana, Giardia lamblia, Entamoeba histolytica/dispar / E. dyspar, Entamoeba coli, Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura and Enterobius vermicularis. As for the food handlers were diagnosed, and all species of protozoa found in children, cysts and helminth Iodamoeba butschlii as Ancylostomatidae; Strongyloides, Trichostrongylus sp. and Schistosoma mansoni. Regarding the conditions of hygiene and sanitation found that food handlers maintain basic care with personal hygiene, housing and food, and mostly have treated water and some kind of sewer system. However, data collected showed high frequency of infected individuals, both among children and among food handlers, and even when comparing parasitological profiles, it was observed that are similar in respect of protozoa. Therefore, it is suggested that food handlers play an important role not only in the spread of intestinal parasites, as well as the prevention of transmission thereof, by the adoption of hygiene practices for food preparation.
