The need for fuels is increasing, as well as the environmental concern related to the consumption of crude oil derived fuels. The development of technologies that use the renewable natural resources as energy is very important to replace conventional fuels that are depleting. Biomass derived fuels are an optimal solution for this requirement, mainly in the transportation sector. Substantial research is a challenge to improve the production of fuels from biomass. The Pyrolysis and Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) consist a feasible route for production of bio-fuels in industrial scale, together to conventional fuels and compatible with the infrastructure as we know. However, the competitiveness of this route is still far from application, and several aspects need further elucidation and technical advances. The factors that will have the major impact on ultimate viability are to upgrade catalyst life and the determination of an allowable level of oxygen that the existing refinery infrastructutre can handle.
