O uso do espaço público urbano: função social do Ponto de Cem Réis.

The main objective of the research is to understand the role of public space in contemporary urban, based on the study of Ponto de Cem Réis. The analysis of public space in its multiple dimensions, establishing important connections with the study of the production of urban space, because within it fall spatial, social, economic, cultural and symbolic, constituting the cities. Given the diversity of existing urban settings, it is observed that the square itself as a prime location of the city, especially by his character of multifunctional space. The squares act as a sort of "breathe" through the urban fabric. In the structures of the city, providing a break they arise landscape that consists mainly of buildings. But the speed with which the city has been changing made gradually, the square was losing its space in urban life. Losing its original features, the squares began to play a role, especially in place of passage, often degraded and marginalized. Currently, there is a strong tendency to revert this situation. Several revitalization projects of public squares, especially in the inner city, have been conducted in order to return to them their ancient function of a place of sociability in urban areas.
