Abstract
dc:description.abstractThis paper presents a study on the topic of socio-spatial segregation in João Pessoa - PB, taking into account for this analysis, the data relating to the IBGE Censo 2000. It aims to analyze the general membership of the city, a real radiograph of this urban space through social indicators of autonomy, quality of life, social inclusion/exclusion and vulnerability. Methodologically, relies on bibliographic survey. From a general discussion about urban segregation, we come to the theme of public policies required to address these issues and its applicability. The socio-spatial segregation in the particular case of João Pessoa is seen here as a result of an expansion process cluttered, built by social actors, particularly State and the real estate industry. We conclude that urban disparities are the result of an unequal system that structure our society. Analysis of segregation in João Pessoa is made from the perspective of the need for a joint work between the State and the organized society to overcome the problem that presents itself.
