ENCEFALOMIELITE VIRAL EQUINA EM DOIS POTROS NO AGRESTE DA PARAIBA

Equine viral encephalomyelitis is a disease that affects equidae regardless of gender or age, with the young animals being more susceptible, manifesting mainly during the hot seasons of the year. The objective of this study is to describe two cases of equine viral encephalomyelitis in Agreste region of Paraiba state, one in the Municipality of Riachão de Bacamarte and the other in the Municipality of Mongeiro. The two animals had difficulty staying in season, (sitting dog position) staggering gait, muscle tremors. A filly also developed difficulty in swallowing. Both had worsening of clinical signs and were submitted to euthanasia. Macroscopic lesions were non-specific and included congestion of the meninges or neurogenic bladder. Histologically, numerous perivascular cuffs were evidenced, predominantly in the gray matter of the spinal cord, associated with diffuse gliosis, necrosis of neurons with foci of neuronophagia. The meninges were infiltrated by lymphocytes, neutrophils and macrophages, characterizing marked non-suppurativemeningomyelitis associated with neuronal necrosis and neurophagia. The encephalon also had perivascular cuffs, but to a lesser extent. The diagnosis of equine viral encephalomyelitis in the cases of this study was based on the association between clinical and epidemiological signs and confirmed by histopathology. The disease occurs in the Agreste of Paraíba. Therefore, vaccination of the equidae of the Region is recommended.
