In this research we seek to value the importance of using concrete materials in teaching mathematics, as stated by Novello et al (2009) the use of concrete materials makes lessons more interactive, and encourages the pursuit, interest, curiosity and spirit of inquiry, encouraging them in asking questions, disclosure of relationships, creation of hypotheses and the discovery of their own solutions. The didactic intervention was composed of three activities using concrete materials in order to motivate, appreciation of the collective work, develop logical reasoning, the interest of students in the interpretation, formulation and resolution of problem situations involving addition and subtraction calculations of integers. With the implementation of the activities we observed that the subjects had difficulties in expanding the concept of natural numbers to integers with the analysis and interpretation of situations to organize the calculation and make the operations of addition and subtraction of whole numbers correctly in situations proposed. The results obtained in the implementation of activities showed that the subjects have evolved as to the motivation, the logical extension of the concept of whole numbers to solve the operations of addition and subtraction in the proposed situations.
