Preservação e conservação do acervo de obras raras da Biblioteca Central da Universidade Federal da Paraíba

The present paper discusses about preservation and conservation of rare works, emphasizing the importance of the collection as a source of information, research and knowledge for the future generations. It aims to analyze the conservation state of the collection of rare works of the Central Library of the Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB), demonstrating the relevance of the appropriate techniques of conservation and handling, considering the fragility of the collection and adopting adequate criteria to select the collection, exposing the negative and positive points found in the section. It was adopted bibliographic and field research with qualitative focus in the methodology. By means of the data analysis, they were observed the adequate procedures of preventive conservation and shortcomings in external agents with environmental factors. Concepts of History of Libraries about preservation, conservation, restoration and degradation of collection were used in order to demonstrate the need to safeguard the collection of the mentioned Library.
