ANTIBIÓTICOS E ANALGÉGICOS EM CIRURGIA NAS CLÍNICAS DE CÁES E GATOS EM JOÃO PESSOA - PB

The main goal of this work is to verify whether the protocols of analgesia and antibiotic therapy in the pre, trans and postoperative periods practiced by the veterinarians in different kinds of surgeries are consistent with the knowledge presented in the literature. The data was acquired by an 11-question survey answered during visits to the veterinary clinics that offer surgery services for small pets. Later, the data were recorded and analyzed through Excel® software. According to our results, we realized the analgesic protocol used by veterinarians is based on multimodal analgesia. In regular surgical procedures, such as orchiectomy, ovariohysterectomy, periodontal treatment, and mastectomies, the veterinarians do not use antibiotics for both pre and trans operative period. The antibiotic therapy is performed in the postoperative period though. Furthermore, the most veterinarians do not repeat the use of antibiotics during the procedure. On the other hand, in the case of post-surgical infection, regardless the protocol of antibiotic therapy practiced, the infections used to happen, being related by veterinarians due to the lack of care by the owner. Finally, we realized none of the veterinarians perform surgical procedures without antibiotics application.
