A terapia ocupacional na atenção básica: um olhar voltado para o agente comunitário de saúde

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

The Community Health Agent is one of the professional components of the Family Health Teams, who is responsible for analyzing community needs, for performing the registration of all individuals of his micro area, and for keeping updated records. In addition to this, the agent participates in team meetings, developing health promotion, prevention of diseases and injuries, and health surveillance in the community through home-based visits. However, this daily work routine involves situations that create overwork, which the agents are often not prepared for, enabling the emergence of physical and mental strain, which may interfere in the performance of activities related to other areas of occupation. This research aims to understand the daily work of the Community Health Agents seeking to identify and comprehend its possible interference in these areas of occupation: Activities of Daily Living, Instrumental Activities of Daily Living, Rest and Sleep, Education, Leisure and Social Participation. The research subjects were eight Health Agents of the Family Health Unit from the Castelo Branco I Community. A focus group for data gathering was performed, which was defined by a type of group interview on a particular subject of study. The data from the participants’ reports underwent a content analysis divided into three stages: pre-analysis; investigation of the material; and processing and interpretation of data obtained. After the analysis, the data were organized into four main categories: Work as a Community Health Agent; Political, legal and management issues; Mischaracterization of the Family Health Strategy; and quality of life of community health agents. In conclusion, there was no significant interference of the work of community health agents in their occupational performance in these areas: Daily Living activities related to self-care, Instrumental Activities of Daily Living, food preparation, Recreation, Rest and Sleep, and Social Participation. Factors such as overwork, demands from the users and the managers for the fulfillment of activities, mischaracterization of the Family Health Strategy and of the agents’ professional duties, were also current results. Stress has been identified as the main factor influencing the quality of life of these professionals.
