Abstract
dc:description.abstractEnvironmental management has gained prominence in municipal, state and federal administrations over the last decades. The important milestone in this process was Law No. 6938/81, which established the National Environmental Policy, which states that municipalities can develop environmental standards in a way that does not conflict with other spheres of government, and may also Jurisdiction and control of activities that may lead to environmental degradation. The 1988 Constitution also marks this process which brings an article dealing specifically with the environmental issue, art. 225, becoming responsible for the inclusion of the environmental theme in the state constitutions and in the municipal director plans. This article explores the situation of the municipalities of Paraíba in relation to the municipal management of the environment, with emphasis on the type of management body, the existence of legislation, the presence and character of municipal councils, types of partnership and actions developed In defense of the environment. The research was based on the Municipal Basic Information Survey - MUNIC, conducted by IBGE in the year 2013.
