Aderência in vitro de bactérias bucais a diferentes tipos de piercings linguais
Abstract
dc:description.abstractThe use of oral piercings is spreading among young people, especially the tongue piercing. Streptococcus oralis figures as one of the bacteria which adhere the most on the surface of tongue piercings, presenting differences in the bacterial colonization pattern on distinct materials of tongue piercings. The aim was to assess the in vitro adherence of E. corrodens (ATCC 23834) and S. oralis (ATCC 10557) to the surface of tongue piercings made of surgical steel, titanium, bioplast and teflon. It used 160 piercings to count the Colony Forming Units (CFU) and 32 piercings for analysis in Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Of these, 96 (24 of each type) were individually incubated in 5 mL BHI (Brain Heart Infusion) broth and 50 μL of inoculum, at 37°C/24h. The others 96 piercings formed the control group and were incubated individually in 5 mL of BHI broth, at 37°C/24h. After this period, each piercing was transferred to 5 mL of saline solution, stirred during 2 min and realized seriated dilutions, that were inoculated by the Drop Technique in BHI agar. The dishes were incubated at 37°C/48h for CFU/mL counting, being these data submitted to Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Whitney and t de Student tests, considering the level of significance of 5%, ie, p-value <0.05. For SEM analysis, the characteristics of the surface of the piercings were described. It was verified means of adherence of E. corrodens for surgical steel (11,95 ± 7,49 x105 CFU/mL), titanium (6,40 ± 2,55 x105 CFU/mL), bioplast (67,36 ± 44,99 x105 CFU/mL) e teflon (36,72 ± 21,01 x105 CFU/mL), existing difference between material types (p ≤ 0,001) and of S. oralis for surgical steel (29,68 ± 31,04 x105 CFU/mL), titanium (24,21 ± 17,26 x105 CFU/mL), bioplast (77,38 ± 56,53 x105 CFU/mL) e teflon (68,34 ± 39,48 x105 CFU/mL), presenting difference between material types (p ≤ 0,007). The four types of piercings presented themselves susceptible to colonization by E. corrodens and S. oralis, being the most significant bacterial adherence in those made of bioplast and teflon. By scanning electron microscopy, it was shown that the four types of piercings had bacterial colonies on the surface, being found greater amount of them in plastic piercings probably due to its irregular and rough surface.
