The crisis has impacted the socioeconomic esfhere causing an economic slowdown, unemployment, household debt and even a boom in the number of people leaving their country in order to have better living conditions. The government responded to this situation with the implementation of austerity measures, witch have further worsened population’s social conditions and contributed very little to the economic recovery. The “help” came with troika bailout, along with the hardening of the austerity measures and the consequent increase of the popular discontentment. In this contexto, this paper builds the hypothesis that the crisis reflected in the political sfhere, causing the discouragement of the population to legitimate the european institutions through voting. In the citizenz point of view, those institutions were the ones to blame for the poor social and economic conditions they were living on. Starting from a theorerical framework about democracy and citizenship, passing to an analysis of the opportunities offered to participation in the politics, and finally adding a comparison of the electoral participation in the EP before and after the crisis; this work will show in what way this crisis have influenced people’s political behavior and analyse the fact that they now express their discontentments in the streets, by public protesting.","abstract_html":"This paper aims to find a link between the euro zone crisis and the decline of the political participation of the portuguese population at the community level – more precisely in the European Parliament elections.
