Terapia ocupacional capacitante: relato, percepções, enfrentamento e inclusão de um indivíduo com toc no meio acadêmico

This study reports the experience lived by a Student Occupational Therapy course at the Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB), covering the period between the second half of 2011 and the second half of 2015 with OCD medical diagnosis, according to the International Classification of Diseases - ICD-10 (F-42). OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) is a psychiatric anxiety disorder characterized by recurrent crises of obsessions and compulsions. Obsessions are impulsive thoughts or undesirable and unintended images that invade the consciousness causing marked anxiety or discomfort, forcing the individual to perform compulsions, or physical or mental acts carried out in response to obsessions with the intention of removing threats, prevent possible failures or simply alleviate physical discomfort. OCD is a serious and disabling mental illness that affects millions of people worldwide, and that limits the life of affected individuals. This report aims to analyze and understand how a degree in Occupational Therapy contributed to the individual's understanding, becoming a relevant occupation in combating and coping of the symptoms of the disorder, which in turn interfere significantly in the everyday individual, affecting their occupational roles and their areas of occupation causing psychological distress. Thus, it is necessary to reinsertion of even more actively in the environment they live in, removing it from the obsessive and compulsive world created by himself, aiming at improving their health and therefore their quality of life. An experience report was conducted done by the own student during his life, from the early symptoms and signs in infancy, strong evidence in adolescence, the losses caused by mental disorder in adulthood, the consequences in the family, interpersonal relationships and self-perceptions along the way performed as graduate student in the course of Occupational Therapy. The experiences narrated sought to demonstrate the importance of social participation for the inclusion of the individual, highlighting the difficulties in the academic environment and achievements acquired during the course of Occupational Therapy. This report enabled the analysis and discussion of the importance of social participation by conducting meaningful occupations in the treatment of the disorder. It was noted the importance of occupations in improving the symptoms of the individual with OCD, but also how beneficial were the experiences in the academic environment. This open environment provided a better understanding and improvement in perceptions of what would be the disorder. These factors were crucial to a better quality of life of individuals, promoting inclusion, social interaction and self-knowledge.
