dc:description.abstractHanseniasis is an ancient infectious disease that bears the mark of stigma and social exclusion since biblical times, nowadays even with treatment and healing, these issues still show prevalent affecting self image of people affected. The dermatologyneurological sequels bring significant losses in occupational settings. The objective of this study was to identify the influence of the self image of among hanseniasis patients on their social participation. It is a qualitative study of the kind case study, with two patients from Complexo de Doenças Infectocontagiosas Hospital Clementino Fraga in João Pessoa- Paraíba, participants in the self-care group in hanseniasis at the same institution. Data were collected through semi-structured interview, categorized and treated according to the speech analysis. The results point inferences and impairment of self-image and social participation of the subjects. Understand the subjective and psychosocial conditions of individuals affected by leprosy enables the improvement of health conditions , confronting prejudice and stigma and expansion strategies aiming at better quality of life.
