Adestramento e bem-estar de cães policiais: um estudo de caso
Abstract
dc:description.abstractEvaluation of policing dogs welfare is an important point, however, little discussed in the literature. Thus, the aim of this study was to discuss general aspects involving the training of dogs and using subjective criteria to evaluate the state of well-being of dogs belonging to the kennel of the Military Police of the State of Paraiba (2nd Cia. BOPE). The work was conducted in the shelter of the military police, in the municipality of Cabedelo - PB. Harvest information was made through weekly visits in March and April 2016. Based on the physical conditions of the facilities, health, nutritional management, sociability and biological functioning of the dogs, it was made a subjective diagnosis of well- state animal welfare. To understand the routine training of dogs, we applied a questionnaire of twenty questions related to this routine and personal questions to one trainer kennel. It was found that most of the points bordering a good health condition of the dogs is the physical structure of the premises, particularly in regard to low availability of space provided. In addition, the social isolation of animals also appears as a limiting factor in ensuring good levels of well-being of dogs that police unit. According to information from one of the trainers, the daily routine of training dogs follows standards set by the Standardization Technical for House Dogs Public Safety (2011). All trainers had a training course and like the dogs working. In summary, there is a need for further work focused on the improve of facilities for policing dogs and a greater concern on the part of trainers in demand for training methods and management more compatible with the needs of dogs welfare.
