dc:description.abstractIntestinal parasites are a worldwide problem that bring harm to the poorest populations, especially school-aged children. Health education in the teaching of science at school is a strategy that may be essential in reducing risk and helping to prevent these diseases. This study aims to contribute to and assess the impact of educational activities in relation to the major intestinal parasites. As a basis to this work, descriptive studies of the underlying principles of Bibliographical Research and Qualitative and Quantitative Research were carried out, and research was undertaken using the Ethnographic Method, with elements of Ethnography of Schooling and Participant Observation. The data was collected through questionnaires, before and after the educational intervention. For data analysis, we used the statistical program GraphPad Prism version 6.0, using Student's t test and the EPI INFO 7, and calculation of the Confidence Interval 95% (CI95%). The research was conducted at the State Experimental Centre for Sesquicentennial Teaching and Learning, a public school in João Pessoa (Paraíba, Brazil), with 264 students from eight classes in the 6th and 7th grade of elementary school, aged between 10 and 14 years. Five educational activities were conducted, divided into: conversation classes aided by different teaching resources, educational workshops and educational games. The results of the preliminary tests illustrated that students had little knowledge of these diseases. The overall average of the pre-test was: Ascariasis: 3.23 ± 2.80 (mean ± SD); Enterobiasis: 1.73 ± 1.82 (mean ± SD); Schistosomiasis: 2.61 ± 2.93 (mean ± SD); Hookworm 1.76 ± 1.72 (mean ± SD): Taeniasis: 2.47 ± 2.48 (mean ± SD). Thirty days after the completion of the educational intervention, a post-test was carried out with the participants, where a significant increase was observed: Ascariasis: 9.12 ± 4.50 (mean ± SD); Enterobiasis: 7.17 ± 2.83 (mean ± SD); Schistosomiasis: 8.41 ± 2.09 (mean ± SD); Hookworm: 8.53 ± 2.24 (mean ± SD); Taeniasis to 7.36 ± 2.98 (mean ± SD). By introducing educational activities in conjunction with play in school lessons, it was possible to promote learning, therefore supporting the educational process, providing innovation, socialization and reflection. Moreover, it is possible to highlight the interest, motivation and participation of students throughout the five educational interventions that took place in the school. It is concluded that the use of different methodological strategies in school health education can encourage the student to have a meaningful learning experience, illustrating that information is one of the best forms of prevention and control of intestinal parasites.
