Lingualização e complexidade : um paralelo possível?

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

The purpose of this paper is to consider the theoretical construct languaging (SWAIN, 2006) as a complex system. A system due to its set of elements in interaction (BERTALANFFY, 2008). Complex because it is possible to identify its general characteristics from the perspective of complexity theory applied to language acquisition (LARSEN-Freeman, 1997; LARSEN-FREEMAN and CAMERON, 2008). It is worth mentioning that the construct does not consider language acquisition as a product, but rather as a process. From several studies in the area of physics, biology, mathematics and natural sciences, Larsen-Freeman and Cameron (2008) point out that the features of complex systems, which are complexity, non-linearity, dynamics, adaptability among others, are observable in several systems in the applied linguistics area, as for example in the discourse, in the teaching and the learning of languages, to mention just a few. Observing such features, I investigate languaging by means of a more comprehensive descriptive analysis with the purpose of verifying its complexity. This new interpretation languaging as a complex system would result in the understanding of the complex process of a system with multiple subsystems, such as collaborative dialogue, corrective feedback, intermental and intramental processes, linguistic items, interlanguage, among others. Sociocultural theory of mind (VYGOTSKY, 2007; 2005) is doubly relevant in this research. Its interactive nature composes not only the theoretical body of languaging but also of the complex systems. On the one hand, languaging emphasizes the dynamic interaction between thought and language as a way of expanding learners interlanguage and consequently the acquisition of the target language. On the other hand, complex systems main feature is the interactive and interdependent action of their agents for the full processing of their activity.
