Reescrevendo Bahia de Todos os Santos à luz e cores: tradução intersemiótica do romance de Jorge Amado para a fotografia

This dissertation is the result of a research that aimed to translate intersemiotically, into photography, two sections of Jorge Amado‘s text Bahia de Todos os Santos: guia de ruas e mistérios de Salvador. The sections are Convite and Adeus. The photographs were taken by the author of this work under deconstructivist theories perspectives which understand translation as transformation, supplement, overflow of the translated text, supplying gaps and enabling the survival of the work that preceded it. The gaps are not seen under a hierarchical optical, but as a result of the absence of limits for interpretations and supplements. In this sense, the guide updates made by the writer himself between 1960 and 1986 corroborate this view, as well as the translation presented here. The impossibility of fixed meanings emerges, in particular, during the construction of a translation. The translator, a fragmented subject and reader, constantly reframes both source text and target text. The description of the process of building a photographic translation brings reflections on the choices made during the (re)construction of a written text into images and includes possible procedures (such as using word lists and story boards) and unexpected supplements such as the figure of the Orisha Eshu as a translator and the crossroad as a starting point or gathering place of possible paths, of choices to be made, of plural meanings.
