Nome, destino e fuga: a construção de personagens em Rachel de Queiroz

The thesis aims to analyze the characters of Rachel de Queiroz, highlighting the representation of women in contexts of oppression and resistance, with a focus on the naming of characters, their destinies, and escape routes. Initially, the study addresses the author's life and literary production, emphasizing the nuances of her writing and her contributions to various genres, such as the novel, drama, chronicle, and poetry. It discusses her trajectory as a novelist and the reflection of Brazilian historical and cultural aspects in her work, as well as the intersection between form and content in her artistic production. In the second part, the focus shifts to the literary creation process and the role of names assigned to characters, analyzing them as markers of identity and symbols of destiny. The prominence of the name "Maria" is highlighted in protagonists such as Conceição, in O Quinze (1930), Dora, in Dôra, Doralina (1975), and Maria Moura, in Memorial de Maria Moura (1992), investigating their trajectories as reflections of the tensions between tradition and resistance. The third part of the work discusses the relationship between destiny and escape, examining the challenges faced by women in patriarchal societies. Themes such as love, decay, pessimism, tragedy, and the mythical element in Rachel de Queiroz's narratives are analyzed. This section delves into the use of masculine mimesis in Memorial de Maria Moura to address issues of gender, power, and female autonomy. The thesis, therefore, seeks to demonstrate how Rachel de Queiroz uses literature to criticize oppressive structures, create complex characters, and discuss universal issues of identity, autonomy, and resistance.
