Abstract
dc:description.abstractThis work aims to analyze the role of cycling in women's empowerment, highlighting the intersections of gender and race. The study originated from the observation of the underrepresentation of women, especially Black and transgender women, in the cycling world. The research, conducted at the Federal University of Bahia as part of the Journalism undergraduate program, utilized a qualitative approach combining bibliographic review and semi-structured interviews with women cyclists. The research culminated in the production of a podcast as a tool to amplify the narratives of these women. Thus, the podcast “Ela Roda as Cidades” (She Rides the Cities) was developed to explore and disseminate these experiences and function as a platform to inspire other women to reclaim their space. The bicycle was analyzed not only as a sustainable means of transport but as a powerful tool for social resistance and empowerment. Key findings from the research indicate that cycling promotes visibility for Black and transgender women, combating stereotypes and enabling greater inclusion in public spaces; and that the revolutionary potential of cycling to transform lives can inspire a new awareness of mobility and equality. The study may also outline challenges faced by women, including safety and (in)visibility, as well as propose strategies for overcoming them. This work reinforces cycling as a vector of social transformation, aligning with the mission of Journalism to not only inform but also transform society.
