Initially, the dissertation examined how, since colonial Brazil, Gamboa's relationship took place with the rest of the city. This relationship, as I argue, was, over time, restructured by two main events: first, by rearranging its region of influence based on the concentration of port activities in the capital in a single space; and, second, by the physical modification of its surroundings with the construction of Avenida Contorno. This last interference caused the division of Gamboa into Gamboa de Cima and Gamboa de Baixo, causing, until today, great repercussions for the life of the inhabitants of the lower part of the slope.
