A adoção de e-books científicos na área de Administração: estudo de caso da biblioteca Prof. Emérito Agrícola Bethlem – instituto COPPEAD/UFRJ

This research deals with the insertion of a collection of scientific e-books, in the Administration Area, in an academic library, having as empirical field the Biblioteca Prof. Emérito Agrícola Bethlem (Library Professor Emeritus Agrícola Bethlem), of the Instituto COPPEAD de Administração (Institute COPPEAD of Administration) of the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro), through the methods: case study, direct observation and documentary research. The research links the e-book with the concept of "objeto técnico-científico-informacional" (technical-scientific-informational object) and lists the social actors and their respective relations with the scientific e-book. The research made an analysis of the basic bibliographies of the stricto sensu courses of the Instituto COPPEAD (Institute COPPEAD), which shows the unavailability of most of the titles indicated in the e-book version and the restriction on the sale of many titles to individuals. The study examines the implications for e-book acquisition, listing the business models offered to libraries, and presents the peculiarities of using e-books. The research discusses the impacts of e-books on the practices and documentary policies of academic libraries, highlighting the importance of a specific e-book acquisition policy. The research presents the international scene of the acquisition and dissemination of e-books in academic libraries and makes a brief comparison with the Brazilian reality. The relevant Brazilian legislation on the availability of e-books is presented, as well as the legal specificities imposed on universities, regarding the acquisition. The research presents two bottlenecks, economic and legal, for the adoption of a collection of e-books, which are external factors to university libraries. In the course of the study, we highlighted the agility in the dissemination of the e-book and the potential use of e-books in scientific communication and in meeting the information needs of library users.
