The objective of the study is to analyze the shared cognitive system between the operator and the ECDIS system during navigation from the perspective of Resilience Engineering. The data for analysis were obtained through simulation. As stated in the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW), Situational Awareness (SA) when using ECDIS is a requirement. Therefore the first approach of the work was to try to measure the SA of officer according to Endsley's theory. For that, a questionnaire was applied to the simulation participants for objective measurement. The verbal protocol was recorded through the think aloud process and functional cognitive models were used to understand the participants' mental processes during the task. Results showed that difficulties faced can lead to goal changes, but it is still possible maintain control and thus safety of navigation.
