Os jardins no Brasil do século xix: glaziou revisitado

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

Along the History of mankind gardens have had their characteristic interpretations linked to the aesthetic thinking of each period, especially those regarding their planning. Brazil had no tradition concerning large gardens and it is only after the nineteenth century that the rising love of Nature leads to the development of this art among us. The forthcoming of the Royal Family raises here similar habits to those cultivated in European courts, including the care for Art in general and for the art of gardenning in particular, adapted to the Brazilian way of life. The first European "botanists" arrive and "sanitarist discourses" are born and Have grown since then, leading to the integration of the local flora to the outline of the city. This also means a reaction and, at the same time, a solution to urban concentration. Brazilian nineteenth century landscape planning took after European ones, especially English, since they are the models for the French gardens. inherited by our artists. Auguste François Marie Glaziou, a French botanic landscaper, arrives in Brazil in 1858, invited by D. Pedro II to become "Diretor Geral das Matas e Jardins". lt is through his works and studies that European elements are fit to our flora. Glaziou's outstanding productions created in Rio de Janeiro, especially those which keep their original features (Passeio Público adaptation, Quinta da Boa Vista and Campo de Santana) are analized in this dissertation. The links between the French landscape architecture and the Brasilian environment in the last century are also focused in the present work.
