The results demonstrated that the surface application of the flame retardant did not significantly reduce the peak of heat release rate and the total heat released from the tested materials, counter to the impregnation treatment performed in other studies. In addition, the untreated MDF was classified as a fire retardant material according to Building Standard Law (BSL) of Japan, while the treated MDF did not meet the requirements of the aforementioned standard.
