A Pintura de retratos no século XIX: Victor Meirelles

Investigates how was built the portraiture in Rio de Janeiro in the nineteenth century, its patterns, its styles and its relationship with social environement, basing on the portraits painted by Victor Meirelles. The portrqiture, in Brasil, began in the seventeenth century, following portuguese models. The French Artistic Mission of 18 16 brought a new model for the gender. The most significative portraits of Victor Meirelles are here analised according to its insertion in the portuguese or french models and according to the artist style, without forgetting its social aspect, since he was requested to portrait people from the most wealthy social groups, including the Imperial Family and the Emperor himself.
