The program CONMULTM (conceived by the L.C.P.C. - Paris), based on the finite differences method for the solution of unidimensional consolidation problems is described. Researches carried out by the L.C.P.C. (Laboratoire Central des Ponts et Chaussées - Paris) itself, the University of Laval (Quebec), S.G.I. (Swedish Geotechnical Institute) and COPPE/UFRJ are also presented. The geotechnical description and characterization of Juturnaíba’s soft organic clay deposit is subsequently presented. Results of pore pressure and settlements computed by CONMULTM, are compared with the respective instrumentation data.
