Abstract
dc:description.abstractA survey of the bird fauna of tbe Santana island, southeastern coast of Brazil was done for a period of 25 months. Seventy seven species were recorded: 7 marine species, 10 aquatic and 60 terrestrial. Aquatic and terrestrial species could be classified in three categories: visiting, migratory and resident. The visiting species probably visit the island periodically. The migratory ones come to the island at random. Santana island has 18 species with stable populations. Cursory survey had been done on the nearby mainland and on Francês island. Fifty two species were recorded in the nearby mainland, 40 of which shared with Santana island. Francês island had 26 species recorded, all shared with Santana and the mainland. Behavioural traits are reported: dispersion, reproduction, foraging, habitat shifts and variation in the occcurence of congeneric species.
