The hydrodynamic phenomena are caused by unsteady filling and were studied considering the chamber’s two horizontal directions. The solution was obtained using the Method of Characteristics. Two theorical examples of filling were developed and their exact mathematic solutions determined. These solutions were in close agreement with the numerical model results. Data of water level oscillations from the Tucuruí Navigation Look II reduced scale model were compared with results obtained from the mathematical model. The scarcity of data available from the reduced scale model, and the fact that these were not entirely reliable made it difficult to carry out a detailed comparison. It was only possible to conclude that longitudinal slope of water surface is of the same order of magnitude in both models. It was also concluded that the water surface slope in transversal direction is of the same order of magnitude as the one in longitudinal direction. This thesis also points out in what directions future research should be conducted in order to achieve a complete modeling of the dynamic phenomena occuring in navigation look chambers.","abstract_html":"This thesis has the purpose of developing a mathematical model representing the long waves which occur in navigation look chambers during filling or emptying procedures.
