The purpose of this dissertation is to back calculate final settlements and coefficients of consolidation under Trial Embankment II built by Brazilian Highway Research Institute on the Sarapui's soft clay at Fluminense Plains. This embankment has seven instrumented sections being five of them with vertical drains and the other two with no vertical drains. The methods used for the calculation of final settlements and coefficients of consolidation were ASAOKA, ELLSTEIN, LONG e CAREY and TAN. For the calculation of the final settlement the conventional method was also used with parameters obtained from oedometer tests. The ASAOKA's method was concluded to be one which produced better results of both settlements and coefficients of consolidation, the results of the latter being compared with values obtained from "in situ"and laboratory tests. A preliminary evaluation of the drain efficiency showed that vertical drains were not as efficient as expected.
