An important groundwater problem is salt water intrusion that may be defined as the landward movement of seawater interface. Intrusion can result from excessive pumping in coastal aquifers and causes increase in salinity of groundwater at a given location. The boundary element method is formulated for and applied to problems concerning a moving interface between fresh water and salt water in porous media. The model is applied to three cases: segregation by gravity action, intrusion by reduction of recharge flow and intrusion into a sink.
