El algoritmo básico es desarrollado a partir de la introducción de variables de desvío en un esquema iterativo para minimización con restricciones de igualdad, ampliando su aplicación al caso general de desigualdad. Se consigue generar una sucesión de diseños factibles, y demostrar que, si converge, su límite es un mínimo local de la función objetivo. Para el proyecto de estructuras se desarrolló un sistema automático de síntesis, implementado en computador, que utiliza el método de optimización propuesto y conceptos de análisis estructural orientado al diseño.
