A new classification is proposed, in which Poeciliidae and Procatopodidae assume family status, forming a clade corroborated by 17 apomorphyc morphological characters. Sistergroup relationships between Tomeurus and the remaining poeciliids, as supported in previous classical revisionary studies, is herein confirmed.
