A limit procedure for slow flows of simple fluids with fading memory is studied. Grounded on Coleman & Noll's aproximation theorem, the procedure aims to avoid the cases of instability that may occur when the fluids of Rivlin-Ericksen are applied. We investigate the conjecture that the instability is due to the different orders of magnitude of the terms that figure in the dynamical equation. By applying the slow flow limit to the whole equation, and not to the stress alone, the equation is unfolded in a sequence of equations; to each of them, only terms of the sarne order are allowed. The procedure is applied, up to the second order, to the simple case of lineal flow and the solution is compared with that obtained by the application of the second fluid of Rivlin-Ericksen.
