In many types of structures that exhibit significant nonlinearity during static analysis, the nonlinear stiffness property is confined to a few predetermined localities. This physical characteristic may be exploited by making use of substructure concepts and selective reduction. In the former, the elastic components may be represented by small matrix of stiffness coefficients coupling then to the nonlinear elements. In the last a substantial part of the previously reduced coefficient matrix is re-used. The reduced system of nonlinear equations is solved by incremental, iterative or mixed methods.
