Abstract
dc:description.abstractA discussion of the present knowledge concerning reaction mechanisms of soils with alkaline chemical additives, and development of a mathematical model based on physical chemistry and application of chemical kinetics equations. Nucleation equations and Drosdov - Rotinyan equation seems to model satisfactorly the pozzolanic activity. It is argued that water content of compacted soils is not enough to provide for thorough dissolution of lime, therefore cationic exchange does not seem to be an adequate mechanism of alkaline stabilization. Arguments support the contact reaction of lime with clay minerals in soils. The Author performed an experimental work including the stabilization of five different soil samples at two lime contents (6 and 30 percent); it was measured the velocity of reaction through chemical analysis of the amount of soil attacked, i.e., the consumption of the clay minerals.
