Abstract

dc:description.abstract

Deals with the genus Philornis Meinert, 1890 (Diptera, Muscidae, Cyrtoneurininae). This genus is neotropical, with few species occuring in southern United States, and includes thirty four species. From these, twenty five are studied, redescribed and illustrated, and fourteen additional species are proposed as new. The identification key includes all species here studied . The known geographical distribution is shown in three maps. The larvae. of Philornis are associated with birds, living intradermically, or living free in nests (feeding on blood or bird ' s faeces). Under the title “Relações ecológicas com aves” (Ecological relationships with birds) a few considerations are made, and a list of flies and their respective "bird-hosts" summarizes the present knowledge of these associations.
