Emphasis was given to the method - developed by Housel (32) and improved by Barata (5, 6, 7, 9) - that permits extrapolation of results from tests on small plates in the forecast of settlements to be expected in larger real foundations. The author had no chance to compare predictions based on plate test data with the behaviour of a real footing, founded on the same soil, but could, at least, collate the values of deformation moduli obtained from laboratory tests with those determined by means of Housel-Barata's method.
