Several attempts were made to prepare 3-(-carboxymethylseleno-)-alanine, a critical intermediate in the proposed synthetic sequence, without success. In view of this unexpected difficulty, the object of the research was changed to the synthesis of <i>cis</i>-3,4-ureyleneselenophane, the parent fused heterocyclic system.
