Germany and the Bund movement in the United States, 1923-1938

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

Recent studies of the Bund have emphasized the movement's chronological development and its relationship with Germany. Although this dissertation will utilize the chronological approach, it will also examine Germany's evolving views concerning Americans of German ancestry. For example, was the National Socialist image of German-America an historical aberration? Or, was it in part the product of the so-called “American Studies” undertaken by German ethnologists during the Weimar years? This dissertation, then, is not only a history of the Bund movement in the United States–its origins, its leaders, its members, and its ideology–but also a study of the ideas that prompted Germany to embark on its ill-fated adventure in the United States.
