Social entrepreneurship a solution to societies problem's : can social entrepreneurship contribute, to the sustainability og Children's homes in Ghana?

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

The subject of this thesis is to explore the potential contribution that social entrepreneurship can make to the operations of children’s homes in Ghana. I will research on recent trend in child care services and the severity of the problem of Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) in Ghana. After analysing the OVC situation in Sub-Sahara Africa I will narrow the research down to the situation in Ghana. Finally I will focus on Osu children’s home (OCH). I will relate the operating activities of OCH to the United Nations (UN) Millennium Development Goals (MDG). My purpose with the MDG’s is to illustrate that the OCH is not operating sustainably. I chose OCH for three reasons. First it is the flagship children’s home of Ghana. The second reason is due to my experience as a next door neighbour to the institute. Thirdly but not the least the problems of the institute came to public attention in 2010 leading to the resignation of the head. This research is based on secondary data and does not involve a field study or any other form of primary data. I came across enough data to assist me in writing this thesis, except that it was difficult finding data on the operations in the OCH. There are numerous efforts being made to elevate children’s homes in Ghana out of poverty by donors. However none of these efforts has been either effective or efficient given the present plight of children living in orphanage homes. The impoverish state of Osu children’s home does not encourage the institute to operate sustainably. The research will demonstrate that give a man a fish you feed him for the day, but teach him to fish and he and many generations are feed for life. The subject of this thesis will demonstrate that the present system of dependency on society is not sustainable. The assignment will illustrate that empowering the OVC’s is a much better alternative solution.
