Adaptation of the BIAS R to Russian language and piloting validation studies

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

#### Motivation The Russian-speaking population in Germany increased in the past 40 years. In Germany, no standardised diagnostic tool for aphasia is currently available to assess Russian-speaking people suffering from late acute and early post-acute aphasia. In most cases, this group of people can speak Russian and German, requiring an assessment of both languages. #### Methods The Bielefelder Aphasie Screening Reha (BIAS R, Richter & Hielscher-Fastabend, 2018) was adapted to the Russian language. 34 neurologically healthy people were assessed by the BIAS R Ru in a group study. Afterwards, two bilingual people with confirmed aphasia in German and potential aphasia in Russian were assessed by the BIAS R and the revised BIAS R Ru. A third participant was assessed by the BIAS R Ru. #### Results Results from the BIAS R Ru and spontaneous speech as well as results from the BIAS R indicate that the BIAS R Ru can assess aphasic symptoms of Russian-speaking people with aphasia (PWA). Symptoms of bilingual aphasia occurred. #### Conclusion Studies with more people with aphasia are required to provide normative data for the BIAS R Ru. After this thesis, the BIAS R Ru must be further evaluated and prepared for assessment of Russian-speaking people with aphasia in the late acute and early post-acute phase. Symptoms of bilingual aphasia require evaluation standards in future research. The BIAS R and BIAS R Ru in combination can be used to compare results from Russian-German PWA.
