A critical index to the letters of Samuel Taylor Coleridge from 1820 to 1834 : on the subjects of "philosophy and religion" and "literature" : a presentation of his later thought.

The collected letters of Samuel Taylor Coleridge are published in six volumes and edited by Earl Leslie Griggs. Volumes II, IV, and VI contain indexes for the letters which include primarily the names of people and publications mentioned throughout the correspondence. This Critical Index is a listing of Coleridge's comments, his thoughts within the letters, classified according to subject areas and serves as a guide to the content of the last two volumes of the collected letters. The two major headings of the Index, "Philosophy and Religion" and "Literature" reflect the dominant ideas of Coleridge's thought found in the letters written from 1820 to 1834 during the last fourteen years of his life. The divisions of the Index are (subdivisions are not listed here): Subject I: Philosophy and Religion The Bible and Biblical Allusions The Christian Church: The Institutional Expression of the Christian Faith in Human Society The Christian Religion and the Christian Believer Ethics in Personal, Social, and Work Relationships The Nature and Being of God History Man: The Human Self and the Human Experience Metaphysics The Mind of Man Nature Philosophy of Science Politics, Government, and Political Science Reason Religions Other Than Christianity Statements of Personal Philosophical Beliefs Statements of Personal Religious Faith The Supernatural and Dreams Theology Subject II: Literature Coleridge's Opinions of His Own Writing Coleridge's Opinions of Other Writers and Their Works Evaluations of Coleridge's Work by Others Language Standards of Literary Criticism Uses of Figurative Language Many of the major headings are subdivided within the Index. The organization of the index is designed specifically to accomodate all areas of Coleridge's thought during this later period of his life. The work is intended to be a complete collection of everything Coleridge said in his letters concerning these subject areas. The correspondence provides a unique source for understanding Coleridge, his brilliant mind, his style, his sense of humor, and his personality. The heart of Coleridge's ideas in the last two volumes of letters is found in philosophy and religion. In the Index are many references to ideas contained in his Opus Maximum, the work, never completed, which was to have been the culmination of twenty years of work and study in philosophy and religion. The common thread which ran throughout his thinking in these later years was the necessity for a synthesis of all elements of the Universe, but particularly the need for the unity of "head and heart" which he viewed as being embodied in the bonding of philosophy and religion. The Index itself occupies the greatest portion of this work, but also included is an Introduction which provides analysis of the content of the Index and of Coleridge's ideas during this period and a chronological table which outlines Coleridge's activities from 1820 to 1834. There is also a guide provided to explain the structure and use of the Index. The Index is intended to be a useful reference tool to accompany any study of Coleridge. The work becomes, however, a concise presentation of a man's thought which cannot be found elsewhere. The listing of quotations and references emerge as a new type of narrative which provides a fresh source for insight into a fascinating literary personage.
