Emphasizing cultural connections in American literature using systems theory.

Multiculturalism is a dynamic field of study and will continue to evolve as our society evolves. Multiculturalism has resulted in new departments, new books, new canons, and new theories from many of America's previously ignored cultures. However, most of these changes have not put America's cultures into conversation with one another. This study proposes that academics should approach American literature using a systems approach – viewing the whole instead of parts. America is a unique society in which each culture contributes to the American culture as a whole. When looking at the literature of that combined culture, it is important to connect all the viewpoints that create the unique ideas and ideals that produce American literature. Focusing on the interconnections and interactions among cultures could bring into the classroom a more realistic and complete picture of American literature and the culture in which it was created.
