My chief endeavor has been to spot Spenser's proverbs and to find parallels to them in his literary environment. I have made especial effort to ferret out the proverbs common to Shakespeare and Spenser. Since no one has made any study whatever of the sententious material in Spenser, in this thesis I am breaking new ground. Of the writers in the Renaissance, the proverbial aspects of the work of Shakespeare and Lyly only have been given any serious consideration. Since therefore no thorough investigation of the use of the proverb in the Elizabethan period has been made, such an undertaking as the present one is necessarily not definitive. In my introduction I have attempted to show that in the sixteenth century proverbs were taken seriously and that Spenser made definite stylistic use of them. I am confident that there are more proverbs in Spenser than those I have been able to establish as such.
