Spectrum School Support : a feasibility pilot study of a novel psychoeducational intervention for parents of autistic students.

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

With the rising number of students identified with autism, the demand for special education services tailored to their unique needs continues to grow. Individualized educational support offers autistic students the best opportunity for success. Parents play a vital role in the special education process by sharing insights into their child’s strengths and challenges, advocating for appropriate services, and partnering with schools to improve overall student outcomes. Despite parents’ critical role, many parents report feeling overwhelmed after their child’s initial autism identification and express a need for guidance, information, and training to understand autism and navigate the special education system effectively. However, schools often lack a consistent approach to providing resources to parents following a school-based autism identification. To address this gap, Spectrum School Support, a novel psychoeducational intervention designed to assist parents of autistic students, was developed. The present pilot study of Spectrum School Support explores initial feasibility and fidelity of implementation, its acceptability among parents and school professionals, and its potential to enhance parent knowledge, empower advocacy, and strengthen home-school collaboration.
