The Mind of the Maker vs. the mind of the maker : Dorothy L. Sayers' trinitarian theory of creation applied to her plays Zeal of Thy House and The Devil to Pay.

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

In an attempt to explain the Trinity, Dorothy L. Sayers has a carefully worked out Trinitarian theology of Creation that she outlined in her book The Mind of the Maker and elaborated in other Christian essays in The Whimsical Christian: Christian Letters to a Post-Christian World. The nature of her theory is that every act of creation mirrors the three-fold structure of the master Creator, and thus can be found in ourselves because we are a creation of God. In order to marry her plays and her theology, I propose to validate Sayers' claim that a three-fold structure can be found in any created thing by applying her Trinitarian theology of Creation to Sayers' own plays. In order to accomplish this, I will first carefully spell out the Trinitarian theology of Creation and then evaluate how it gives dramatic expression to her plays Zeal of Thy House and The Devil to Pay.
