The attitude toward women in the eighteenth century as reflected in English literature.

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

To understand the eighteenth century attitude toward women it is necessary to know those things which caused it--its background. For a long time the literature of this period has been passed as being unimportant and mediocre. Now, however, it is attaining a vast importance. The age is being recognized as a great era of change. Those things which happened between 1702, the accession of Anne, and 1798, the publication of Wordsworth's Lyrical Ballads, were the fore-runners of our ideas of today. The men who wrote at that time were equally as modern as some of our great thinkers of today. The seeds of our contemporary literature were first beginning to germinate in the seventeen hundreds. Our twentieth century women owe their freedom and suffrage to the pioneers of that day.
