The literary relationships of Edmund Spenser.

In Spenser's literary relationships may be found the key to his poetic development. Without the records of his friendships, much less would be known about the man Spenser or about the poet. The man played a noble, courageous part in the real world; the poet sought escape to a land of romance where his expression was built on his personal emotions and was colored by his reflections. The significant impression which the man gained from association in the world of affairs, the poet translated into an artistic record of his best thought and feeling. Spenser's poetic career was definitely launched about the year 1579, a time when English literature was transformed from "a dreary nursery ground of experiment to a 'Garden of the Hesperides'." Those who helped to bring about the transformation were Spenser's friends and patrons. Greatest of these were the Elizabethan adventurers, noblemen, and courtiers, who were fired by the enthusiasms of the Renaissance and to whom all things were possible. Over Spenser was cast the romantic glow of high aspirations, of daring deeds, and of a court emblazoned with the personality of a great queen, so that in the poet, too, stirred the sense of power that "vivified" the English race long after the great queen was dead.
