This study reveals the significance of Mark Twain's Nevada years. In Nevada it was believed his genius was discovered; there it flowered. In Nevada Twain lived his Western experience to the fullest, and the result was loud and clear. It was an understanding and unflinching assertion of the ordinary self of the ordinary American which, no doubt, helped make Twain one of the foremost men of letters in the world even today. The Innocents Abroad was Twain's first successful book and Roughing It was his second. Both are highly provincial and both preserve to our time the story and spirit of an era which for long had vanished.
